How this ID photo maker removes the background and sizes your photo
An ID photo maker has to solve two separate problems before a snapshot is usable for an ID or passport application: an exact outer frame size (in millimetres, converted here to pixels at 300 DPI) and a specific background color — usually white, but blue or red for several everyday documents in China. Getting a clean, evenly-lit backdrop with a physical sheet or wall is fiddly; segmenting the person and painting a flat color behind them in software is more reliable and repeatable.
To remove background from the photo, this tool runs a small on-device machine-learning model (MediaPipe’s selfie segmenter, the same class of model used in video-call background blur) directly in your browser to tell foreground pixels from background pixels, then composites your chosen background color underneath. The model file and its runtime are hosted on this site, not a third party, so the photo never has to leave your device for this step.
China’s common sizes — 一寸 (1-inch), 二寸 (2-inch), and their small/large variants — differ slightly by source and by which office is asking, and a driver’s license or passport photo fixes the background color by rule. International passport and visa photos add their own millimetre sizes (Schengen and several other countries share 35×45mm, the US uses a 51×51mm/2×2in square). What this tool does not do is check head height or face position against a country’s formal rules — several standards (including China’s) specify how much of the frame the head should fill, which needs face-landmark detection, not just background segmentation. Avoid clothing that matches the background color you plan to use — a white shirt on a white ID photo background makes the shoulders blend in.
