Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to a price or work backwards from a tax-included total. Load a US state base rate or enter your own combined rate.
State base rate only. City and county taxes are added on top in most states, so the rate you actually pay is often 1–4 points higher. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax.

How sales tax is added — and removed
Adding sales tax is straightforward: multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate and add it back. The more common mistake is working backwards. If you have a receipt total that already includes tax and want the pre-tax amount, you cannot just subtract the rate — you divide by one plus the rate. At an 8% rate, a $108 total came from a $100 item ($108 ÷ 1.08), not $99.36.
In the United States there is no national sales tax. The rate you pay is a state base rate plus, in most states, additional city, county, and special-district taxes stacked on top — so the combined rate at the register is often one to four percentage points above the state figure. Five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no statewide sales tax, though some Alaska localities levy their own.
What gets taxed also varies. Many states exempt groceries and prescription drugs, tax prepared food at a higher rate, and treat clothing or digital goods differently. For an exact figure on a specific purchase, use your state or local revenue department’s rate lookup by address.
For business use, remember that sales tax you collect is not revenue — it is money held on behalf of the tax authority and remitted on a schedule. The reverse ("extract") mode here is useful for backing tax out of gross receipts when you record income separately from the tax collected.
Key formulas (reference)
Add tax: tax = price × rate ; total = price + tax Remove tax: pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate) ; tax = total − pre-tax (rate as a decimal, e.g. 7.25% → 0.0725)

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the pre-tax price from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by one plus the rate as a decimal. At 8% tax, a $108 total came from $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100. Subtracting 8% of $108 instead gives the wrong answer ($99.36) because the tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax amount.
Why is my local sales tax higher than the state rate?
Most US states let cities, counties, and special districts add their own sales tax on top of the state base rate. The combined rate at checkout is often one to four percentage points higher than the statewide figure. Use your state revenue department's address-based lookup for an exact rate.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaska municipalities levy a local sales tax, so 'no state sales tax' does not always mean zero tax at the register.
Is everything taxed at the same rate?
No. Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries and prescription drugs, tax prepared restaurant food at a higher rate, and treat clothing, services, and digital products differently. This calculator applies one flat rate — adjust it for the category if your state differs.
How is sales tax different from VAT?
US sales tax is charged once, at the final retail sale, and shown on top of the listed price. Value-added tax (VAT), used in most other countries, is collected at each stage of production and is usually already included in the displayed price.
