These are gross (pre-tax) figures. Take-home pay is lower after income tax, Social Security and Medicare, retirement contributions and benefits. “Semi-monthly” is 24 pay periods; “biweekly” is 26. A common shortcut — hourly × 2,080 — assumes exactly 40 h/week and no unpaid time off.

Converting between hourly, monthly and annual pay

Every pay rate is the same yearly amount divided a different way. To convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary, multiply by the hours you work per week and the number of paid weeks per year. The reverse — salary to hourly — divides the annual figure by those same total hours. The other periods (weekly, biweekly, monthly) are just the annual amount split into 52, 26, or 12 parts.

The assumptions matter more than the arithmetic. A "full-time" year is often quoted as 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), but if you take two weeks of unpaid leave the real figure is 2,000, and the implied hourly rate rises. Overtime, paid holidays, and weeks with three paychecks (which happen twice a year on a biweekly schedule) all shift the picture.

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same. Biweekly means every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month — 24 paychecks, each slightly larger. Job offers sometimes blur the two, so check which one a stated "per paycheck" amount refers to before comparing offers.

These figures are gross pay, before deductions. Take-home pay is lower after income tax, Social Security and Medicare (or local equivalents), health insurance premiums, and retirement contributions. Use gross pay to compare offers and budget from an estimate of net pay.

Key formulas (reference)

Annual = hourly × hours per week × paid weeks per year
Hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
Monthly = annual ÷ 12   ·   Weekly = annual ÷ paid weeks   ·   Biweekly = weekly × 2   ·   Semi-monthly = annual ÷ 24

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week and by the number of paid weeks per year. At $25/hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks: 25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000. If you take unpaid time off, use fewer paid weeks — the implied annual figure drops.

What is the 2,080-hours rule?

2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks, the standard full-time hours in a year with no unpaid leave. Dividing an annual salary by 2,080 gives an approximate hourly rate. It slightly overstates the hourly figure if you actually take unpaid days off.

What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?

Biweekly is every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly is twice a month — 24 paychecks, each a bit larger. On a biweekly schedule two months a year contain three paychecks. Job offers sometimes use the terms loosely, so confirm which one a 'per paycheck' amount means.

Is this gross or net pay?

Gross — the amount before any deductions. Your take-home pay is lower after income tax, Social Security and Medicare (or local equivalents), health insurance, and retirement contributions. Use gross pay to compare job offers.

How does unpaid time off change the numbers?

Entering unpaid weeks off reduces the paid weeks used in every conversion. Your annual total falls, and because you're working fewer total hours for that pay, the equivalent hourly rate for salaried roles effectively rises.
